Everything Important Happens in the Women’s Bathroom

Warning:  This post won’t have a picture.

We are strangers in a strange land.  Although we’re doing OK and managing to feed, clothe and house ourselves, there are very few people we can converse with.  We’ll be grateful when we join up with the group and can talk to more people than just one, (don’t worry, we still like each other).

But, today I made a connection with a couple of Spanish women.  We were in a public washroom, trying to do the right thing and washing our hands after using the facilities.  Not one of us could figure out  how to turn the tap on.  We waited for the automatic sensor to kick in, we pushed on the tap, we turned the temperature control…we remained dry.  I went out the door and asked K if he’d had any luck and how the tap worked.  He gave me a funny look and said just push on the tap.  Back I went, used two hands and a lot of force and the water flowed.  We all laughed, I felt connected.

Love that. It’s always the simple things that connect us with people near and far away. Shared laughter is a real treasure.
