Family Ties

18 05 2015

We’ve just spent 2 days in Vancouver.  Our flight arrived Friday afternoon,  we were met at the airport by my aunt and uncle.  Sounds quite normal,  but I had never met them,  or,  if I had, I don’t remember.

My mom came from a family of 14 children.  7 remained in Holland,  4 emigrated to British Columbia,  and 3 to Ontario.  Language and distance meant I only knew my Ontario family.

But because we’re family we’re welcomed with open arms. I’ve learned more of family history,  I’ve met cousins I’ve only heard about, we’ve shared stories of family joys and even family struggles. I will leave this place with a greater appreciation for those whom I do not know well, but whom I call “family”. I feel blessed.
